Two 1983 Auslesen and bottle stoppers again

Jon Hicke, Vancouver: I had the good fortune on a recent trip to Los Angeles to stop by Wally’s Wine and purchase some old German Riesling. The first bottle we opened was a 1983 Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Burgberg Riesling Auslese from the Ruwer. It was a dark golden colour with broad, deep flavours: slightly burnt brown sugar with dried orange peel and seemingly off-dry sweetness balanced by a persistent acidity. The second was a 1983 von Hövel Oberemmeler Hütte Riesling Auslese from the Saar. Much lighter (in colour and body) and fruitier with flavours that suggested the essence of peaches...
