The meaning of the word vintner, and who on earth vints?

Bob Ross, NJ: I wonder if you could write a few words about the use of the word "vintner" to describe a wine producer.  I've looked at the OED and the OCW and found the history of the word, and received the following note from Tim Fletcher on current usage in the UK:  "As far as I'm aware, 'vintner' is simply an old fashioned word for wine merchant. We use the term, though, because my father, Rodney Fletcher, is a member of the Vintners' Livery Company, although the majority of companies which describe themselves as 'vintners' are simply using the term in order to appear more...
