Suzie Q, VA: Is there an official (or at least a semi-agreed-upon) number of recognised wine grape varieties? me: There is no official register, although I wrote here last August about a couple in New York who were enterprisingly making a sort of periodic table of the 100 best-known grape varieties. In the Oxford Companion to Wine , in the entry on grape varieties, we reckon there are probably about 10,000 varieties of vinifera , the European species of grapevine from which 99 per cent of all wines are made.
