Aspects of Ch Gruaud Larose 1982

Last week I got into a discussion with a friend about a couple of bottles of Ch Gruaud Larose 1982 he has in his cellar. Although my knowledge (certainly when it comes to tasting) of the high brow Bordeaux is very limited, I volunteered the fact that this is a deuxi è me grand cru . He then argued that this was labelled a grand cru and should therefore not be 'second rate'.
The label only mentions 'Grand Cru Class é ', omitting the 'deuxi è me' part (rather conveniently?). The label also stated, in rather big font, the name Cordier,...
