Recent vintages of Barolo

Sam Harris, London SW6: I need help identifying the 'great' vintages of Piedmont. I am aware that from 1996 onwards they were all good, but which ones stand out? There seems to be a great deal of debate whether 1998 is up there with the rest? And is 2000 really that special? I don't know who to trust.  Also, as I collect Barolo, which vintages are ready to drink now and which should I be putting away? I don't want to open an expensive wine when I should wait?
