What's that funny smell in Oz reds, and Viognier?

I hesitate to pose this question for fear of sounding ignorant. Why do some (seemingly a majority of) Australian red wines have such a unique smell? The smell (to me) is one of nail polish or medicinal bandages. This is a distinct from 'brett', 'VA' or high alcohol in my opinion. It seems particularly noticeable on younger wines - Pinots, Shiraz and less often Cabernet. A 2001 Curlewis Pinot (non-special uber -bottling) and 2004 Sorrenberg Gamay presented it on most recent memory.
