Lee Goldsmith, Cannes: I am based in Cannes and have tested very extensively. The best wines from Provence will compare favourably with rosé wines from anywhere in the world. There is a move by supermarkets to push the heavier roses from the New World, wines made, for example, with 100% syrah. It is hard to tell if they are really any different from chilled red wines from the same maker. Provence still beats all comers with the subtlety of their wines. Compare one of these new wines with the 100% syrah from Saint-Baillon which is called Opale where the Opale is still fresh, unforced and delightful but sturdy...
