Are vertical tastings of fine wines a waste?

During the Mistral Wine Encounter I had the great opportunity of tasting 13 vintages of Comte George de Vogüé’s Musigny Vielles Vignes. It was a great experience but I feel more and more that great wines are supposed to be enjoyed one by one (with food) instead of being compared with other vintages or other great wines. What do you think?
Anyway, we tasted the following vintages: 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002. For my taste, the best were 1990,1993, 1996 and 2002. I was very impressed by 1996, full of fruit and...
