Are vertical tastings of fine wines a waste?

During the Mistral Wine Encounter I had the great opportunity of tasting 13 vintages of Comte George de Vogüé’s Musigny Vielles Vignes. It was a great experience but I feel more and more that great wines are supposed to be enjoyed one by one (with food) instead of being compared with other vintages or other great wines. What do you think?
