Whites v reds in South Africa

Interesting that you comment in wines of the week that, unlike you, 'South Africans seem to prefer their reds'. I wonder if that is actually clearly the case, certainly at a wine-critic level. Of the unfortified wines awarded five stars in last year's Platter guide, there were four reds and five whites. The recent Trophy Wine Show (admittedly with half the judges from elsewhere) gave golds to 11 reds (unfortified again) and 10 whites.
