How to use the Oxford Companion

I found it very difficult to work with the Oxford Companion . Question: What is the fastest way to access inmformation e.g. Rutherford. Do I have to go to "R" and scroll to Rutherford? When I put the word in the search machine, do I have to be on the particular side "R u t ..." in order for the search machine to pick it up?
