Patricia, London: As a sometime-practising architect, I wholeheartedly agree with Alan's comments regarding acoustics . Hard surfaces are anaethma. I'm currently trying to persuade a client that she/they really do NOT want wood floors in a building to be used 24 hours per day, especially where we MUST have hard ceilings for infection control. A difficult sell, because wood looks beautiful, even if it sounds horrid. The worst "restaurant" I ever visited was a former warehouse (brick walls, concrete floors, very late 19th century) on the docks in Corpus Christi, Texas where the sommelier and I could not even hear...
