That Bulgarian Cabernet - really South African?

Chris Lake, UK: Regarding the recent note about Bulgarian vineyards, I have been told twice in recent months (by a City accountant and an MW) that all those wonderful Bulgarian Cabernets that we were drinking in early ‘90s were actually imported South African wine. These were presumably rebottled to earn foreign currency for Bulgaria and apartheid-ridden South Africa. Or is this an urban myth?...
