What's wrong with S African Cabs?

Patricia S, UK: Viz. John Platter's list of 5-star South Africans, we were pleased to see some old favourites (Hamilton Russell, Vergelen, Boekenhoutskloof) but a little shocked to see few Cabernets (and so-called Bordeaux-blends)! A few years ago now Cabernet overtook Pinotage as the most widely planted black variety in South Africa . What is going on with Cabernet? Or is Platter just not fanatical about the world's favourite red wine? What are your views on South African Cabernet?...
