Carmenère, as I understand, was considered a late ripener during its 19th century Bordeaux heyday testified to by Cyrus Redding in his 1860 French Wines and Vineyards . ("The Carmenert, Carmenère, Malbeck and Verdot grapes are the species most cultivated, on the[se Medoc] plans which have for so long been held in high estimation.").
