How Mondeuse and Syrah are related

Nick Brookes, Vine Trail, UK: I have recently been on a trip to Savoie, and was interested that several of the leading growers believed that Mondeuse was the genetic parent of the Syrah grape in the Rhône. Having read your description of Mondeuse in Vines, Grapes and Wines, it seems that it is the same as Grosse Syrah, planted in the Rhône. I was wondering whether you could enlighten me as to whether the Grosse or Petite syrah was planted first in the Rhône, and whether the Grosse Syrah is planted...
