What makes a wine organic?

Mel Knox, San Francisco: Do you know what the standards are for use of the term 'organic' on French and Italian wines are? I had heard that as long as the treatment came from the earth, ie mined rather than laboratory developed, one could do anything: mined bordeaux mixture versus something Rhône Poulenc turned out, for example. Where can I find out about this? me: There is an excellent book called The Oxford Companion to Wine with which I believe you are familiar. It should answer your questions.
