How to clean glasses

A Wilson, Glasgae, Scotland: This may seem like a minor problem, but I was wondering what the most effective way of cleaning glassware is? All too often I have received conflicting opinions (even from MWs) as to how one should clean wine glasses. Do detergents really leave an invisible residue? And, if we should only use hot water to clean glasses, and this hot water is sufficient to remove greasy fingerprints, why is it not able to remove a more water soluble substrate such as detergent? Does it mean I can no longer enjoy cheese on toast with my finest Riedel? PS Any input from those who are...
