German Fine Wine: JJ Prum Mosel Riesling 1988-2009

Friday 10 May 2013

,

In this excellent tasting we shall taste our way through 3 decades of the remarkable JJ Prum from 1985 to 2005. The wines are all of Prädikat level including Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese all from the regal Riesling grape variety. This is an excellent opportunity to taste Riesling across different sugar-levels as well as plethora of various vintages from two of JJ Prum's leading vineyards, Wehlener Sonnenuhr (Sundial Vineyard) and Graacher Himmelreich (Kingdom of Heaven Vineyard). As Riesling is one of the greatest white grape varieties to mature there are some true gems to discover on this tasting.

Weingut JJ Prum

Sebastian Alois Prum established it in 1911, after he received the vineyards as his share of the inheritance. He soon after built the winery up to a respected estate but it was under the stewardship of his son Sebastian that the estate really began to take shape. Sebastian's son, Manfred, has run the estate since 1969 and today the estate has 34 acres of vineyards planted with Riesling on steeply-sloping, schist soils. The vast majority of the holdings are in the top middle-Mösel including the famous Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich. Yields are severely restricted and harvesting is late and often continues through to late November. The winemaking is meticulous and the wines are characterised by their purity of fruit as well as by their distinctive mineral/slate character.
