The Winery tasting, featuring Gut Hermannsberg

You are invited to our next tasting on Wednesday 18th May from 17.00-21.00h at our shop in Clifton Road W9.

We will be featuring Gut Hermannsberg, the legendary estate on the Nahe in Germany. We will begin with their sparkling Blanc de Noirs and follow with three dry Rieslings. One will be Steinterrassen (stone terraces), poured from a single magnum – come early for that! Joining us from the estate will be Tobias Fricke.

Our reds will be all-Italian, all new arrivals – two from our recent trips to Tuscany and Piedmont.

Dreolino are in Rufina, northeast of Florence. They make delicious, no nonsense Chianti. We agonized long and hard over whether or not to buy it in the old straw-covered flasks, finally opting for the newer label and bottles. Feel free to lobby us for the flasks for next time. After all, you may need new candle holders for your 1960s retro interior.

Our trip to Piedmont last month took us to Scarpa, whose cellar is a treasure trove of mature Barolo, Barbera and several wines made from obscure local grapes such as Freisa Secco and Rouchet. Martina Barosio, who runs the winery for her mother and stepfather, also showed us something very unusual – their Dolcetto d'Acqui 2000, picked late and vinified dry. We were rather taken by this remarkable wine and will be showing it on Wednesday.
