Swartland Revolution: A winemaker tasting with Craig Hawkins

Tuesday 21 May 2013

,

Craig Hawkins of Lammershoek and Testalonga is one of the world's most exciting and daring young winemakers – this is an unmissable opportunity to meet him and taste his ground-breaking wines.

South Africa can justifiably claim to be one of the most exciting wine producing countries in the world at the moment, but it's no thanks to producers in classic regions like Stellenbosch – it is the winemakers behind The Swartland Revolution who are shaking up the status-quo. This beautiful region to the north-east of Cape Town has a burgeoning community of young winemakers that are pushing boundaries by using natural and artisanal methods to take their terroir-driven wines to levels of complexity that South Africa hasn't achieved before, and we are delighted to welcome the most exciting of this group – Craig Hawkins – to Roberson for this tasting.

We will begin by looking at Craig's fantastic 'El Bandito' Chenin Blancs, before tasting from the range of wines he makes at Lammershoek estate. Then we will take a look at some of the region's other leading lights, including Eben Sadie, Intellego (Jurgen Goews), Porseleinberg (Callie Louw) and Baadenhorst – getting Craig's invaluable insight into the wines of his friends, neighbours and fellow revolutionaries.

The complete list of wines on show is as follows:

Testalonga Skin Contact 2009
Testalonga El Bandito Cortez 2011
Lammershoek LAM Chenin/Viogner 2012
Lammershoek Chenin Blanc 2010
Lammershoek Underwater Wine 2012
Intellego Elemtis Chenin (vintage T.B.C.)
Intellego Red (vintage T.B.C.)
