It was quite marked when, in my Union des Grands Crus blind tasting of wines from the northern Médoc at beautiful Cantemerle (did I mention quite how far south of the northern Medoc it is?), I moved from the flight of Haut-Médocs to the St-Juliens. The latters' combination of high extract and high IPT (polyphenol index) may well come into its own in about 20 years' time but for those of us looking for something to drink in the rather shorter term, it could be that a more modest or more southerly appellation would be more useful....
