Vega Sicilia unveil their Rothschild rioja
8 Aug 2012 by Jancis Robinson
Pablo Álvarez (pictured) of Ribera del Duero's most respected bodega Vega Sicilia has finally announced what the two wines produced by the company's new enterprise in Rioja will be called. As is the current fashion in Rioja, the term Reserva will be eschewed. The top wine will be called Macan while the second wine will be called Macan Clásico. The name of the second wine seems rather confusing to me, since even in Spanish clásico means 'outstanding' or 'classic', just as in the Italian system of wine denomination, X Classico denotes the superior heartland of region X. Perhaps it makes more sense to Spanish speakers?...
