A Manhattan roof garden

The other day in New York, at the end of a wonderful lunch at Maialino, the Italian restaurant in the Gramercy Park Hotel with Betsey, widow of Johnny Apple, and family, we were asked if we'd like to go many stories up to the roof and see where their vegetables and herbs are grown.

Knowing how Americans pronounce the word 'herb', I was already plotting some terrible pun involving in urbis, but I was extremely intrigued. The Manhattan skyline is hardly the most bucolic setting in the world.
