Margaux was a particularly successful appellation in 2015 but was not such a standout in 2016. The move back from exaggeration to a purer expression of Margaux finesse continues in general but while the Margaux style was in evidence, some 2016s seemed to lack drive and freshness. There was clearly skilful extraction resulting in considerable smoothness but too many wines seemed a little light on flavour.
