Burgundy 2015 – Cl-Cy

Image

See this guide to our extensive coverage of Burgundy 2015. Our picture shows what you see between the slats of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey's smart new premises south-east of Chassagne.

Now that the wines have been sorted into groups by producer, you can sort the wines within those groups by score or appellation.

DOMAINE BRUNO CLAIR

Dom Bruno Clair 2015 Marsannay

Tangy with citrus and cedar on the nose. A bit lean and flat on the palate. (JH)

Dom Bruno Clair, Source des Roches 2015 Marsannay

Like the straight Marsannay, zesty on the nose. And here much richer on the palate, with rounded citrus fruit and much better balance of fruit and freshness. Almost but not quite tart on the finish. (JH)

Dom Bruno Clair, En la Rue de Vergy 2015 Morey-St-Denis

Oaky/mealy nose. Sulphur showing a little for the moment. Tight, dry, a little short on fruit in the middle but that could be the sulphur getting in the way, hence the plus. (JH)

Dom Bruno Clair, Grand Cru 2015 Bonnes Mares

More smoky and savoury on the nose than the Clos de Bèze. A little herbal and stemmy. Firm and chewy but with the fruit to carry the firm structure. Needs a lot of time. So expensive. (JH)

DOMAINE FRANÇOISE ET DENIS CLAIR
Good honest expressions of Santenay of both colours.

Dom Françoise et Denis Clair 2015 Santenay

Savoury nose with lean citrus and masses of chew. Not the most sophisticated white burgundy. A bit big and unsubtle. Quite chewy and alcoholic on the end.

Dom Françoise et Denis Clair 2015 St-Aubin

Calcareous site. Pale straw colour. Tense and exciting on the nose. Much more interesting than this producer’s village Santenay 2015. Sleek and racy with crunchy fruit. Much better value! Straightforward and already open.

DOMAINE BRUNO CLAVELIER

DOMAINE CHRISTIAN CLERGET

Dom Christian Clerget, Les Crais 2015 Morey-St-Denis

Nuts and apples – plus a certain mushroom character that might be slightly rot-affected. Light palate, simple flavour profile. Not entirely convincing. (RH)

Dom Christian Clerget 2015 Chambolle-Musigny

Deep colour, very rich nose with a plum and herb character. This reminds me, weirdly enough, of freshly fermented Shiraz from McLaren Vale! It really is a warm style. There’s a lot of rich charm here – but I’m not sure you would pick it as Chambolle. (RH)

Dom Christian Clerget, Les Violettes 2015 Vosne-Romanée

Black cherry, violet, crunchy and expressive with a proper floral scent on the finish. Very tender tannins indeed – very much an early-drinker, though there is gorgeous fruit intensity through to the finish. (RH)

Dom Christian Clerget, Les Charmes Premier Cru 2015 Chambolle-Musigny

Sweet oak scent on the nose, rich cherry fruit, soft mouthfeel that nonetheless leaves a fine tannic grip on the finish. Much more refined than their non-premier cru Chambolle. It’s a masculine style that should develop reasonably well. (RH)

Dom Christian Clerget, Les Petits Vougeots Premier Cru 2015 Vougeot

Rich plummy fruit – ripe and rich, showing the ripeness of the vintage. Expertly balanced palate with the acid just refreshing the full body and grainy tannin structure. Delicious sour cherry element on the finish. (RH)

Dom Christian Clerget, Grand Cru 2015 Échezeaux

Candied cherry fruit. Strong medicinal character, and some volatile acidity makes this quite edgy on the nose – not unpleasant, but without the purity of fruit you might expect. It’s not too expensive relative to many grands crus, mind (based on the trade price). (RH)

DOMAINE Y CLERGET
A new signing for Haynes, Hanson & Clark that shows promise in reasonably chunky but pure style.

Dom Y Clerget 2015 Volnay

Cask sample. Notably dark crimson. Really very intense and dramatic on the nose. Then exciting tension on the palate. Certainly makes a statement! Almost more Pommard intensity than Volnay elegance but lots of delivery.

Dom Y Clerget, Santenots Premier Cru 2015 Volnay

Dom Y Clerget, Clos du Verseuil Premier Cru 2015 Volnay

Cask sample. Monopole.
Lots of definition on the nose with some veginess. Very firm tannins – almost bitter on the end. Hardly a gentle touch! Needs lots of time. For those who value structure over fruit.

Dom Y Clerget, Champans Premier Cru 2015 Volnay

Cask sample.Very seductive yeast-extract nose. Bright fruit with fine acidity and sufficient fruit for the tannin. Excitingly ambitious with nuance and potential. The fruit almost hides the tannin.

Dom Y Clerget, Les Caillerets Premier Cru 2015 Volnay

Cask sample. Real vigour and upright tannins but lots of subtle ripe fruit too. Real spread of red fruits on the front palate with extremely appetising freshness on the finish. Fine polish and zest. Clean, appetising, just the right side of severe on the finish.
