If studying for the MW qualification were a religion, it would be good old Catholicism. The communion is global. There is the holy trinity of exams: practical, theory and dissertation. There is the heaven of passing, the damnation of failing and the purgatory of retakes. They have transubstantiation, we have fermentation – both miraculous, in their own way. They have the Virgin Mary, we have the Blue Nun. They have chalices … erm … we have Riedels …

Okay, so it’s a little spurious. Suffice to say that both involve a fair amount of red wine and demand a lot...
