I got a funny feeling this month while working on my research paper. It was a familiar yet long-dormant sensation; by no means unpleasant, but momentarily bewildering in its unexpectedness.

I leaned back from the spreadsheet that glowed from my screen to assess. Heart-rate: calm. Eyes: not crying. Mouth: upturned. Chest: puffed. Goodness gracious! I realised that I was feeling proud, of all things.

The project I’ve been working on since July last year in its current incarnation (but since September 2011 in earlier forms) is now, finally, coming together in a very satisfying way. I have completed all...
