In the kitchen at El Bulli

On Saturday night Nick and I were lucky enough to enjoy our last-ever meal at Ferran Adrià's world-famous restaurant El Bulli on a wild headland past Roses on the Costa Brava. This summer 2011 season is to be its last as a restaurant. As you can see from, it is to become a foundation, and Adrià, as always, has a surfeit of ideas and schemes for the future.

We have been going here ever since the early 1990s, when food writer Simon Hopkinson introduced us to this extraordinary centre of gastronomic experimentation. We counted up and reckon this was probably Nick's eighth meal there and my seventh. (He snuck in an extra visit to write an article about the staff meals at El Bulli, which may be revealed by clicking on the El Bulli tag at the bottom of this.)

We will both be writing much more about what we were lucky enough to experience on Saturday, but in the meantime here is a short film I made as we were leaving, a look into the ktichen around 12.30 pm as it wound down from full service. You can see Ferran on the left of the picture above. He seems more energetic than ever (we had gone to his new places Tickets and 41° in Barcelona the previous night).
