Below is the second of three short films shot at the end of last week in (O)Porto, northern Portugal. Wines of Portugal are really going into overdrive to try to promote exports and had invited wine people from all over the world to participate in a two-day conference, the Touriga Nacional event described here yesterday and the wine fair shown below.

Almost 100 of Portugal's better wine producers decided to participate in the wine fair, held in the old customs house (shown above) right on the Douro quayside across the river from Vila Nova de Gaia. As you can see, it was the most stunning setting and uniquely Portuguese in look and feel (as, indeed, is the sprauncy new Yeatman hotel across the river in Gaia).

In the film you can see such wine writers and educators as Simon Tam of Hong Kong and Neal Martin of and wine producers such as Peter Bright and the bow-tied Luis Pato, who was heavily involved in the planning of these events.

I had little more than a couple of hours to taste here but came across all sorts of interesting wines on which I will report. The thing about Portuguese wines is that so many of them are so very distinctive.

I'll publish the results of the Touriga tasting tomorrow.
