Undercover work starts on Mosel bridge

I have just received the following worrying news from Sarah Washington in the Mosel Valley, who has co-ordinated the campaign of protest against the proposed ugly and unnecessary bridge across the Mosel as illustrated here:

Yesterday (Saturday) and into last night the government began cutting trees above one of the most sensitive sites on the B50 route – above Wehlener Sonnenuhr. This happened in a cloak and dagger way under the cover of darkness to avoid Pro-Mosel's ongoing registered demonstration which had been scheduled to cover all weekday working hours (Mon-Fri from 7am until 5pm).

It seems that not all the scheduled tree-clearing was managed in one go, therefore demonstrators are now waiting at the site for the workers to return. This will mean a round-the-clock vigil, and – in the event of further work occurring – an inevitable run-in with the authorities, probably some time over the next 24 hours.

As most of you don't need a blow-by-blow account, I will now switch to a blog which you can follow here. You can already see some pictures there.

Those interested in further information, video or high-quality photo documentation should get in touch.
