Variety, varietal or cultivar – and how you spell them

We all have our linguistic foibles. Split infinitives can induce a hissy fit in some normally sane people. Others lose sleep over misplaced or missing apostrophes. Those who read this site very carefully will know that one of my favourite hobby horses is the increasingly common confusion of the word variety (noun, grows in the ground) with the word varietal (adjective, typically applied to a wine).
