In the north of Italy lies the large-producing region on Veneto where we find the famous Valpolicella wine. Blended from the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinari grape varieties there are a variety of intriguing style produced here from the light and fruit-driven Valpolicella Classico to the blockbuster Amarone style with the inbetween modern Ripasso expression. This is a tasting designed to warm you up during the cold-snap of February.
Amarone della Valpolicella – Tommasi
Amarone, meaning "the bitter one," is the style made from partially-dried grapes (passito). The resultant style is full-bodied and layered with a chocolate-texture and rum (due to the minimum alcohol of 14%) and raisin character (due to the dried grapes it's pressed from). This style is one of the most indulgent and complex examples in the world with excellent ability to age.
The family-owned Tommasi Viticoltori (Tommasi vintners) was founded in 1902 and is situated in Pedemonte, in the heart of Valpolicella Classico region extending over 135 hectares of vineyard. Tommasi is principally acclaimed for its incomparable red wines of the Valpolicella Classico region (a total of 95 ha); Amarone Classico, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, and Recioto della Valpolicella with the famous “Amarone”, which is without doubt, one of the great wines of the world as their flagship. Tommasi has specialised in the production of this “Divine Nectar” for decades, and has deservedly become one of its' principal ambassadors to the world.
