Château Léoville Poyferré vertical tasting with Chief Oenologist Isabelle Davin

Thursday 29 November 2012

,

Isabelle Davin, chief oenologist at Château Léoville Poyferré, will lead a comparative tasting of Poyferré selections from the past three decades.

This is a traditionally styled wine from a Bordeaux estate with a long and storied history. A total of 9 wines will be presented on the night, including recent vintages, such as 2009 and 2010, alongside classics from the 1980s and 1990s. For En Primeur purchasers, this is a wonderful opportunity to taste these young wines in their infancy and see how they are now developing.

Classed as a 2nd Growth Estate in 1855, Poyferré was originally part of the greater Léoville estate, which also included what are now Léoville Barton and Léoville-Las Cases, until it was created as a separate property in 1840. The estate is a consistent, quality performer, creating wines that are profoundly seductive and have a defined fleshiness. Recent vintages have been particularly strong, with the 100 point rated 2009 described by Robert Parker as, “One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage.”

Although blessed with a legendary terroir, significant effort is required to both preserve and constantly improve the property. Isabelle will share observations and experiences from her time at the estate and discuss why she firmly believes in the old Médoc saying, “a truly great wine is made in the vineyard.” At Château Léoville Poyferré this is as true today as it was in 1840.
