Handford Wines Nuits-St-Georges Masterclass with James Handford MW

Nuits – Saint- Georges James Handford MW Master Class

Wednesday 1st October sit down tasting with James

Here we conclude James’s tour of the Côte de Nuits.Famously, Nuits-Saint-Georges has no Grand Crus vineyards. The mayor at the time of the classification, Henri Gouges, chose not single out a commune for elevated status. The region does make up for its lack of Grand Crus, however, with high levels of quality and a huge range of diversity found within the Premier Cru vineyards. This quality and diversity is primarily attributed to the geographical influence of the Meuzin Valley that splits the appellation in half. Three styles can be seen in the appellation. At the southern end, Premeaux produces the lightest style of wines. In the northern part of the region, the wines are often more elegant as vineyards are situation on higher slopes with top sites bordering Vosne Romanee. In the central core, just south of the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, the vineyards are planted on heavier, clay dominant soils producing fuller, more robust wines. This central core is home to the most critically acclaimed sites. We will be focusing on the wines from the northern and central parts of the region. We will show: a four vintage vertical of Henri Gouges Porrets 2002, 2005, 2009 and one older vintage to be confirmed; a horizontal from Chauvenet Les Damodes 07, Les Bousselots 07, Les Perrieres07 & Les Vaucrains07; Faiveley Les St Georges 1989, Jean Jacques Confuron les Chaboeufs  1996, Robert Chevillon Les Bousselots 1995 & kicking off with a glass of Porrets Nuit – Saint – George Blanc
