Introduction to Serious Burgundy

Thursday 14 March 2013

,

The wines of Burgundy are wrapped up in the most complex system of appellations, with a never ending stream of producers and vintages to get to know – remember not to confuse the brothers with the uncles and the cousins! It is home to the most profound wines on the planet, but also the easiest place in the world to waste money on a dissapointing bottle that costs a fortune. Despite all this, Burgundy captivates audiences and has a loyal army of wine geeks that debate and disect the differences between the hundreds of vineyards and winemakers.

If you've always wanted to get to know the region better but been daunted by the knowledge required, then worry no longer. This tasting will introduce you to the wines of the fabled Cote d'Or, by focusing on two of the most famous villages – Puligny-Montrachet (for the whites) and Gevrey-Chambertin (for the reds). It is suitable for anyone that has a good grounding in wine, but wants to begin the journey to becoming a Burgundy geek!

We will be tasting 10 top quality wines from each level of the appellation hierarchy, including Bourgognes and village wines from top producers, before finishing on some spectacular Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines that will show you what all the fuss is about.
