Invitation to our monthly tasting – The Winery W9

Monday 10 December 2012

,

You are invited to our next tasting on Monday 10th December from 17.00-21.00h at our shop in Clifton Road W9.

We are very excited that, barring transport meltdown, we will be joined for the evening by Mauro and Daniela Veglio. The Veglios have built a great reputation for making fragrant Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and a clutch of Barolo Crus in Annunziata, a part of La Morra at the heart of the Barolo zone in Piedmont. We squirrelled away some of their Dolcetto and village-level Barolo in our cellar specially for the evening. Daniela speaks excellent English. Mauro speaks excellent Italian and Piemontese. Fear not though, our Italian colleague Giorgio will be nearby if communication falters.

The rest of the line-up will be similarly stylish and celebratory. We will be kicking-off with Champagne by Denis and Anne Velut from Montgueux, the village on the hill overlooking the city of Troyes.

This month’s dry Rieslings are straight out of the back-of-our-van from the Mosel and its tributary, the Saar.
First up, from Wehlen, the heart of the Middle Mosel, a crisp, lean, tightly-wound, laser-focused Riesling by Gerd Studert of Studert-Prum.

We have been importing von Othegraven wines enthusiastically for almost a decade and were amazed that the 2011s could find yet another gear. Max Riesling trocken 2011 is, in essence, the first picking of the Grand Cru Altenberg vineyard behind the house. It is ridiculously good. Opulent, powerful, a lesson in minerality, terroir and slatey goodness.

Our latest shipment of Chateau Haut-Pougnan has also arrived from Bordeaux and we will be showing Jean Gueridon’s zingy white, a bright, grassy Sauvignon Blanc with a splash of Muscadelle.

Completing the red line-up will be the deep, succulent Crozes-Hermitage, 100% Syrah, by David Reynaud. David has been biodynamic for years (the extreme of organic farming, where decisions are made according to the Lunar Calendar).

We do hope you can join us and, as usual, feel free to bring a friend.

Our following tasting will be at The Winery and is provisionally slated for Tuesday 29th January.
