Invitation to our monthly tasting – The Winery W9

Monday 25 February 2013

,

You are invited to our next tasting on Monday 25th February from 17.00-21.00h at our shop in Clifton Road W9, featuring new arrivals from Germany, Italy and a special treat from the south of France.

Bandol, one of France's most ageworthy reds, is the mad king of Provencal wine that can trace its roots back to Roman times. It takes its name from a pretty coastal town on the Cote d'Azur, not quite as chic as St Tropez or Cannes, but whose harbour is still crammed with expensive white motor boats and yachts. Bandol’s vines are inland, dotted around the villages up in the hills. The wine is made mainly from Mourvedre, a grape that needs lots of heat and sun to fully ripen. Even when it does, it can be tannic, dark and meaty. We’re going to try Olivier Duffort’s Domaine de l’Ermitage Bandol 2007. http://www.thewineryuk.com/growers/domaine-de-l-hermitage-bandol/

We have frequently searched along the Ruwer in Germany, a small tributary that joins the Mosel just east of Trier, where the wines have remarkable delicacy and race. A tip from a teacher and part-time wine importer in Holland brought us to Marco van Elkan's door. He works full-time in a social research project at Trier University, so our appointment had to be early. Very early – we were tasting dry Riesling at a bracing 8.30h in the morning. http://www.thewineryuk.com/growers/van-elkan-mertesdorf/

From the Nahe we have two new arrivals from von Racknitz. We’ll be opening one of Matthias and Luise’s delicious 2011 dry Rieslings – packed with intense minerality and texture. Also, we have another batch of their distinctive red wine, the 2005 Pinot Meunier that they bottled specially for us. http://www.thewineryuk.com/growers/von-racknitz-odernheim/

We will also be showing three wines from Italy. Two perennial Winery favourites are back in after selling out just before Christmas. Cantina di Casteggio’s latest silky Barbera from south of Milan and two from the Paladin family, northeast of Venice – our favourite organic Prosecco and their impressive, new, spicy Traminer. http://www.thewineryuk.com/growers/bosco-del-merlo-annone-veneto-organi…

We do hope you can join us and, as usual, feel free to bring a friend.

Our following tasting will be at The Winery and is slated for Monday 11th March.
