Riesling Module – The Winery Wine Course

You are invited to a module of The Winery Wine Course on Tuesday 30th July, in which we will be focusing again on the glories of German Riesling.

We are delighted that we will be joined by Gerrit Walter, young winemaker and rising star from the Mosel. Gerrit was an intern at The Winery in the summer of 2009 after which he went home for the harvest and then did a long stage with a highly-regarded estate in Rheinhessen. He has now been back at his family’s winery for a couple of years making great wine.

In addition to featuring Gerrit’s wines from the ridiculously steep slopes of the Mosel, we will be exploring variations and nuances of different regions such as the Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Nahe and Franken.

We will revel in Riesling’s transparent expression of terroir – ­the volcanic soil of Franken, the steep, slate slopes of the Mosel and the perfumed depth of historic Rheingau.

We will unravel some of the complexities – the levels of the Pradikat system and such “basics” as German wine labelling, which there is nothing basic about!

While concentrating on the dry styles, we will also taste a couple of fruity, sweeter wines.

As usual, the module will open with a short introduction to wine-tasting technique to help everyone impress even the most snooty sommelier.

The tasting will start at 19.30h and take place in the back room of Kandoo Restaurant at 458 Edgware Road. There will be some Persian bread during the tasting and a round of starters as we close.
