STARS OF THE LOIRE: DAGUENEAU VS COTAT

Wednesday 7 November 2012

,

Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre are the two most famous villages in the Loire Valley, and Dagueneau and Cotat arguably the greatest producers of Sauvignon in the region. Guests will have the chance to taste some of the rarest, most highly-lauded wines from the Loire, including the legendary Cuvée Paul, as we pit four top wines from each producer against each other in a blind tasting which will finally decide which is the greatest – Dagueneau or Cotat, Pouilly-Fumé or Sancerre.

There are many great domaines in the Loire valley, but when it comes to crafting world class Sauvignon Blanc there are few that can compete with Dagueneau (Pouilly-Fumé) and Francois Cotat (Sancerre). We are big fans of both at Roberson and have often had the debate about which one of the two estates produces the more interesting wines. We decided it was high time to pit these two legendary domaines against each other in a blind tasting, using the 2010 vintage to compare and contrast their respective merits.

We will be tasting:

Domaine Dagueneau: Blanc Fumé de Pouilly, Pur Sang, Buisson Renard, Silex.

Domaine Francois Cotat: Caillottes, Culs de Beaujeu, Monts Damnés, Grande Côte.

All of the above wines are from the 2010 vintage, and we will then round off the tasting with a look at Cotat's 2001 Cuvée Paul and Dagueneau's 2008 Jardins de Babylone (OK, it's from Jurancon, but its still a Dagueneau wine!).
