The Winery – Invitation to a ticketed tasting at Cafe L'Amour Encore W1 on 14th August

Tuesday 14 August 2012

,

You are invited to our next tasting, an event at Cafe L'Amour Encore, 1 Woodstock Street W1 (just off Bond Street and Oxford Street) on Tuesday 14th August from 18.00-21.00h.

It's a great opportunity to taste some of our slightly more top-shelf wines alongside the very talented Pratibha Khaitan’s canapes. Pratibha trained as a pastry chef in Paris and worked at Bleeding Heart in Farringdon before setting up her own cafe in Woodstock Street.

We will be showing some of our latest arrivals and kicking off with one of our favourite new champagnes. Made by Christophe Lefevre, it's biodynamic (the extreme end of organic, ruled by the lunar calendar) and from the Marne valley, well west of Epernay on the way to Paris.

Our latest shipment from Rioja arrived today and, given that it's summer, we thought we'd show an impressive white Rioja by Roberto Pangua of Heredad Pangua Sodupe. He's the guy that almost killed us with lunch when we last visited. After the tasting he grilled the entire contents of the local butcher's shop. We were four hours late for our following meeting and all we wanted to do was lie down.

After visiting California earlier in the year, our first shipment has just arrived after its very long transcontinental, transatlantic journey. We're excited to be introducing a brilliant dry Gewurztraminer from Navarro Vineyards, a little piece of Alsace at the north end of the Anderson Valley.

Also, a succulent, gnarly red from Wild Hog. Daniel Schoenfeld and his wife Marion headed into the hills in the 1970s, away from civilisation to go back to nature. Their home is a 40 minute drive along dirt tracks and across streams from the nearest "proper" road, which itself is 20 or 30 minutes from the nearest town, Jenner (population 136). Anyhoo, Daniel makes deep, adult Zins and Carignane. We'll be tasting his Nova Vineyards Lake County Zinfandel 2007.

Deborah Cahn and her husband Ted Bennett, who started Navarro, also went back to nature around the same time. One big difference, they set up next to the road. Good call! It certainly makes it easier to find and to visit.

Dry German Rieslings? There will be two, the first by Andreas and Susanne Barth's Lubentiushof with their sensational von der Leyen 2010 from the vertigo-inducing, slate terraces on the River Mosel.

The second from the historic Langwerth von Simmern estate in the Rheingau. When we picked-up a couple of weeks ago, we were amazed and impressed to see the ever-so-charming and ever-so-chic Baroness von Simmern bringing the pallet truck to our van.

Also from the Rheingau, we will be showing Pinot Noir from Chat Sauvage, the upstart Pinot winery set-up by Burgundy-loving Gunther Schulz, the property developer from Hamburg. Until recently the inexhaustible Michel Stadter was doing absolutely everything. Vines, wines, overseeing the building and commissioning of their new winery on an outcrop opposite Schloss Johannisberg. He was getting quite tired. "There was really not much point keeping my flat – I never really went home." So a new Pinot Dude, Mathias Scheidweiler has been drafted in to take care of the vineyards.

While we were in Bordeaux we visited Chateau Fougas on the Right Bank in the Cotes de Bourg. Since our previous visit Jean-Yves and Michele Bechet have totally converted to biodynamics and the wines are silky as ever.

Completing the line-up, barring snarl-ups between Tuscany and London, we are planning to show a Rosso di Montepulciano from Boscarelli, in our opinion the finest address in the area.

We do hope you can join us – as usual, feel free to bring a friend.

Tickets are £30 each and can be booked by calling 020 7286 6475. Spaces are limited.

Our following event will be at The Winery on 5th September when we will be joined by Reiner and Kiki Flick, the energetic couple from the Rheingau's now making wine from Queen Victoria's favourite vineyard.
