Could these grape-derived spirits be a purer expression of terroir than wine?

Distillation is a family tradition at Domaine Roulot, a legendary estate in Meursault. Their beautiful, recently restored copper still is dated 1866 and though it was rented out after the death of Jean-Marc’s father Guy in 1982, it is now gleaming, back in family hands and producing outstanding single-vineyard, vintage-dated spirits.

Sold under the clever name L’Esprit des Lieux (spirit of the places), they include two lieux-dits, Luchets and Clos du Haut Tesson, and three premiers crus, Charmes, Clos des Bouchères and Perrières (see the map below)...
