2020 Rhône – Châteauneuf and Vacqueyras whites

Bunches of Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc © Christophe Grilhé

Just three of the distinctive white varieties used in the wines reviewed below (left to right): Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc. See this guide to our coverage of 2020 Rhône.

Some lovely white Châteauneufs have been made in 2020 with freshness and fruit to the fore. Expressions differ with the varying blends, the only issue being the élevage and successful integration of oak.

The 81 tasting notes below are grouped by appellation then listed in alphabetical order of producer (sur)name – but you can change this.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Mas des Restanques 2020 Vacqueyras

50% Viognier, 25% Roussanne, 20% Marsanne, 5% Clairette. Aged in 500-litre barrels. Organic.
Creamy Viognier apricot and peach aroma. Ripe but restrained on the palate, the fruit full but bright, a line of acidity giving drive and keeping everything in proportion. Some well-integrated oak. Quite long on the finish. (JL)

La Monardière, Galéjade 2020 Vacqueyras

Attractive stone-fruit aroma with a creamy edge. Palate has a real depth of ripe fruit; round and gourmand with just enough acidity to provide balance. Ideally a wine for the table. (JL)
