Guigal Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Vertical 1995-2009
Monday 17 November 2014
,
Domaine Guigal is the most famous producer of Cote Rotie in the Rhone valley. Guigal also produces great wines from a myriad of appellations in the Rhone valley including; Chateauneuf du Pape, Hermitage and Cote Rotie. The benchmark for quality in the appellation is set by Guigal Cote Rotie wines.
Guigal bought Chateau d'Ampuis in 1995 and produced their inaugural vintage the same year. The chateau, one of the jewels of the Renaissance, overlooks the Rhône River and is surrounded by grapevines in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Annual production is slightly more than a mere 2,000 cases each year. The wine is vinified in temperature controlled, closed stainless steel tanks for about 4 weeks. Ampuis is aged for 38 months a combination of 100% new, French oak barrels and foudres. The wine is made from fruit that’s picked from 7 different vineyards with vines ranging from 25-75 years of age. The blend of Ampuis is usually close to 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. Château d'Ampuis slots into Guigal's legendary range of Côte-Rôties immediately below the famous 'La-La' wines but priced a lot lower.
