Handford 25 Series: 5 Decades of Haut Brion

Tuesday 4th November sit down tasting 6.30pm with James Handford MW

Chateau Haut Brion of Pessac-Léognan was the sole property in Graves to be awarded the supreme status of Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. This epic tasting will form part of our 25th anniversary celebrations with a line-up featuring 98, 99, and 100 point wines according to Robert Parker. This property was bought in the 1930s by US banker Clarence Dillon and today his great grand son, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, resides as president. Since this time, the Delmas family have been régisseurs (stewards) of Haut Brion. In 1964, Jean-Bernard Delmas created the first stainless steel fermentation hall in Bordeaux which was very revolutionary for the time. Delmas also completed much work on clonal selection which will, in all likelihood, be regarded as his most important contribution to the wine's production. Jean-Philippe Delmas, Jean-Bernard's son, is the current steward of the property and continues the family tradition. The unique terroir of Haut Brion has nine metre deep gravel soils giving deeply falvoured wines. They hold a remarkable balance between fruit and earth flavours that are capable of ageing for decades. It is estimated the property has around 400 different clones in the vineyard, and it is this great diversity that lends itself to the incredible complexity. Haut Brion produces wines with the perfect balance between strength, finesse, firmness, and sweetness, and is considered the connoisseur's First Growth choice.

We will taste 1964, 1970, 1975, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995 and 2000
