Handford Wine Opus one Vertical with James Handford MW

Wednesday 4 February 2015

,

Opus One was born of the shared vision of two of the wine world's most legendary figures: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and Robert Mondavi. The story goes that they met in Bordeaux in 1978 it took them just one hour to decide on a joint venture in California. In 1981 a case of the first vintage of Opus One became the most expensive Californian wine sold at that time commanding a $24,000 price tag. This firmly cemented its place as America’s first ultra-premium wine, establishing a category of wine priced by the bottle at $50 and above. Opus one has a distinctive style that marries fruit grown in the ripe Californian style with wine making of the bordelaise. We will taste the joint first release of 1980 and the current release alongside 8 other vintages.
