Handford WineThe wines of Giuseppe Rinaldi & Francesco Rinaldi

Wednesday 4 November 2015

,

Sit down tasting with Greg Sherwood MW,

Greg has travelled to Piemonte several times in the last couple of years and has always been bowled over by the quality of these two producers. Both of these producers create wines of the great old style of Barolo and have taken their rightful place among the most revered examples of the Langhe’s old school.

Giuseppe Rinaldi’s methods are among the most traditional among Barolo’s truly great producers and his wines are monuments to this approach. Powerfully structured, hauntingly perfumed, very slow to mature and completely without concession to current fashion Rinaldi intentionally produces a style of wine not to please the crowd but wines that demand respect. Rinaldi is a fierce adherent to the tradition and his wines are stupendously rare. It’s no surprise that the wines of Francesco Rinaldi e Figli are also steeped in tradition. Francesco was the cousin of Giuseppe Rinaldi and together these two superb family wineries have marched down through time side by side, both upholding the unique, traditional style of Barolo. The winery is located in the town of Barolo itself, founded in 1870, when Francesco Rinaldi inherited a vineyard and house in Barolo. One hundred and thirty years later, much of the same techniques are still used in the Francesco Rinaldi cellars to produce some of Barolo’s greatest wines. The estate is now run by Luciano Rinaldi’s niece, Paola Rinaldi, with help from her sister, Piera, and they continue to make beautiful wines within the great traditions of Barolo. They are prized for their magically light single cru wines.
