Languedoc 2009 – small but perfectly formed

Languedoc News, published by the trade organisation the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Languedoc, reports a small crop but what looks to be a great vintage – what they actually say is 'grand et gourmand' but gourmand is so hard to translate in this context: 'appetising', 'lip-smacking'? Here's the gist of their report, with the French original below.

With no great climatic calamities during the year, a very hot August contributed to the ripening and concentration of the berries and a healthy crop, but it will be smaller than in 2008 – estimated at less than 12 m hectolitres, down 8% on last year, which was not big. Whites are particularly affected, with volumes down 20-30%. (Estimates for France as a whole suggest the harvest will be bigger in 2009 than in 2008, up from 44 m hectolitres to 47 m.)

Cool nights in June and July promoted balance in the fruit and a hot August accelerated the ripening and concentration stages and brought the harvest forward by at least a week.

Signs are good for the grapes already gathered in: whites are fully ripe and concentrated, the quality of the red varieties, which seem to have withstood the heat of August well, is high.


Une petite récolte pour un millésime 2009 qui s'annonce grand et gourmand

Après une année météorologique sans heurt et un mois d'août caniculaire qui a favorisé la concentration et le mûrissement des baies, le millésime 2009 s'annonce gourmand autour d'une récolte saine et très qualitative. En revanche, la récolte régionale devrait être plus faible qu'en 2008, avec une estimation prévue en dessous des 12 millions d'hectolitres.

Si le volume de la dernière récolte sera probablement plus faible qu'en 2008, le millésime 2009 s'annonce grand et gourmand, avec un état sanitaire qualifié de « parfait ». Il faut dire que l'année s'est déroulée sans heurt météorologique. Les mois de juin et juillet ont bénéficié de nuits fraîches, idéales pour l'équilibre futur de la vendange. Le mois d'août, particulièrement chaud et sec, a accéléré le processus de maturité et de concentration, avançant la date des vendanges d'une bonne semaine. En revanche, selon les prévisions de la direction régionale de l'Alimentation, de l'Agriculture et de la Forêt (Draaf) du Languedoc-Roussillon publiées le 1er octobre, le volume de la récolte régionale, contrairement à l'ensemble de la récolte française, «
serait en baisse de 8 % par rapport à 2008. Elle descendrait sous le seuil des 12 millions d'hectolitres, un million de moins qu'en 2008. Les vins blancs seraient plus particulièrement touchés avec une baisse de 20 % à 30 %. » Cela ne devrait cependant pas affecter la qualité du millésime, qui s'annonce « excellent » selon Agreste Conjoncture, la lettre d'infos du ministère de l'Alimentation, de l'Agriculture et de la Pêche. Dans le Languedoc-Roussillon, chez les premiers blancs rentrés, on constate une belle maturité phénolique et une belle matière concentrée. Côté rouge, on note l'excellente tenue des cépages traditionnels, qui ont bien résisté aux fortes températures et au temps sec de l'été : grenache, carignan, cinsault sont à leur aise, ainsi que la syrah et le mourvèdre. Le merlot et le cabernet sauvignon déjà en cuve montrent une belle maturité phénolique.
