Indie writing competition – Bolomey Wijnimport

Peter Keller enters our indie competition with an account of the man who might be said to turn a city of water into a city of wine.

Living in Amsterdam with its magnificent museums, world-famous canals and innumerable bikes is one big pleasure, but what truly makes it a feast is David Bolomey’s wine business.

David started in 2007 as an online retailer, focusing on the classic French wine regions: Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Loire valley. Given the amount of attention by the wine trade to these areas it may come as a surprise, but David has been able to discover some little known but very exciting producers in all three. Nowadays he sells a stunning selection of Champagnes, Beaujolais and wines of the Jura as well.

Once you have read all the interesting stories about the wines on his website (which is absolutely state of the art) and have placed your order, the wines are home delivered with an environmentally friendly ‘bakfiets’ (at least when you live in Amsterdam).

Much more fun however is to collect the wines yourself in the storage. David is happy to share a good glass of wine and some stories on his latest discoveries.

Apart from running his business, David is also the founder and editor of Bordoverview, a website no true Bordeaux lover can do without.

The last couple of years many chefs and restaurant owners have found their way to David’s personally selected wines as they have recognised that these are exciting wines created by gifted winemakers.

Having been his customer since 2011 I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed when following his advice, so I invite you to have a look at his site or even better, pay him a visit the next time you’re in town.
