Indie writing competition – Windham Wines

Jan Bouch sends in her entry to our indie writing competition.

In May of 2009, my husband retired and we made a thoughtful and conscious decision to leave Napa, CA, and return to the state of Vermont. For the previous nine years, I enjoyed many delightful experiences tasting and learning about the wines of Napa and Sonoma, the Carneros and Russian River regions. Additionally, I was a member of a book group that includes many of the woman winemakers, brokers and wine business consultants. It was a wonderful time.

So, when we moved to southern Vermont we went on the hunt to find a local wine shop that could meet our criteria:

    • Vast knowledge of wine varietals
    • A system that tracked our purchases and wine tastes
    • Interest in introducing us to new and different wines
    • A friendly and welcoming atmosphere
    • Fun wine tastings with an educational component
    • Prices that fit budgets
    • Activities and collaborations with local organizations.

Marty Ramsburg (pictured here courtesy of Ned White) and her husband Frank not only meet the criteria, they exceed it regularly.

First and foremost, if Marty is in the shop and sees you walking in, she walks toward you with open arms and wraps you in a big hug. Marty is very wine knowledgeable and brings her excitement of wines of the world to both the shop and the wine tastings. Frank can tell you everything you ever want or need to know about your purchasing history and tastes. Additionally, he offers a discount when wines are purchased with cash rather than credit.

I submit this entry with the store logo as it is a perfect reflection of Marty and Frank and their collaborative nature and commitment to our diverse community. They made the transition from Napa Valley an easy one.
