New Wave South Africa – your chance to taste

Here's a chance to experience a great evening at a bargain price. We firmly believe that South Africa is one of the world's most exciting wine-producing countries at the moment (click on the South Africa tag above for a list of our many articles on this subject). South African wine has always been keenly priced and the Cape has long offered some of the best white wine value in the world and some well-made renditions of the classic wine styles of Europe. But today a new generation of younger wine producers are also offering a completely different range of styles and flavours, many of them uniquely South African. These bright young things are breathing new life and fresh air into the whole world of wine (see, for instance, Saturday's  Giving the southern hemisphere an American accent).

So we are delighted to offer you a chance to meet around 30 of the best of them and taste their wines at the inaugural New Wave South African Tasting. Come and experience the tangible sense of camaraderie, talent, youth and openness that pervades much of the new South African wine scene today.

This is an informal walk-round tasting on the evening of 23 September at The Vinyl Factory, Soho, London. (Entry via Phonica Records, 51 Poland Street, London W1F 7LZ.) The event will run between 5 pm and 9 pm. Feel free to come any time between 5 and 8. We certainly won't run out of wine. Please note that this is a separate tasting from the trade event during the day on the 24th.

There will be some superior food producers too from whom you can buy solid matter to soak up these great liquids – and I will be lurking in the corner with a stack of the brand new, 4th edition of  The Oxford Companion to Wine, willing and able to dedicate them personally.

The hard work of organisation is being done by Swig, who, along with Dreyfus Ashby, Indigo, New Generation Wines and Fields, Morris & Verdin, import these stunning wines.

Expect to meet:

  • Adam Mason – YARDSTICK & MARVELOUS
  • Adi Badenhorst – AA BADENHORST
  • Alex Starey – KEERMONT
  • Carl van der Merwe – DE MORGENZON
  • Chris Alheit – ALHEIT
